Design In Progress
February 6-April 25, 2010
Henry Ford Museum is filled with design: autos, toys, furniture — even our beloved Wienermobile™. In each case, someone designed it to look and perform the way it does for a very specific reason. For 11 weeks, February 6-April 25, we’ll celebrate the world of design, from the magnificent to the mundane, from things that startle us to things we barely notice. In exhibits, tours and even a lecture series, we’ll explore how designers continually reshape the world around us.
Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller Exhibit
February 6-April 25, 2010
Based in tiny Zeeland, Michigan, the company gave the world some of the most iconic objects of the century: Charles and Ray Eames’s molded plywood Lounge Chair, George Nelson’s Marshmallow Sofa and Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick’s Aeron Chair. Those works – and dozens of others – are at the heart of this exhibit. For these legendary designers, it wasn’t enough for furniture to be beautiful. It had to be practical. It had to make the workplace a better place.
Inspired Design Lecture Series:
An Evening with John Berry
March 25, 2010 (Doors open at 7pm; Begins at 8pm)
When it comes to Herman Miller, John Berry is the insider’s insider. He spent 16 years as vice president of corporate communications, working alongside a veritable who’s who of furniture design. His 2004 book, "Herman Miller: The Purpose of Design," inspired this exhibition. Berry will do a book signing following the program. Books will be available for purchase.
Cash Bar will be available.

Conversation with Don Chadwick
April 22, 2010 (Doors open at 7pm; Begins at 8pm)
Born in California between the two World Wars, Don Chadwick was one of that generation of young designers who redefined the spaces where we work. Innovative, fearless, demanding and exacting, Chadwick was co-inventor — along with Bill Stumpf — of the revolutionary Aeron chair. Chief Curator of Industry at The Henry Ford, Marc Greuther will lead this lively conversation.
Cash Bar will be available.
